Ahmed Cameos |
|||||
In the final episode of The Incredible Mr Ahmed, there's a particular scene where I'm advising people against living in the house next year. Some of you actually spotted (and subsequently asked me about) a number of people in this scene who looked slightly familiar. Were you right, or were you simply imagining it? Let's find out!
Good-old Ollie Hamilton (one of my uni housemates) provided the voice for the first visitor, so I decided it was only fair that I roughly model the character on him. Ollie last appeared in the DVS Public Service Announcement - this is one of my highly obscure animations that I made in my first year at uni, and it doesn't appear on the site. If you want to know more about it just send me an e-mail at tom@questionablefilms.com - who knows, maybe I'll even give you a TOP SECRET link to the cartoon! Who's next?
Richard Manber - my long-time best friend and star of The Mumblerhood - hasn't appeared in a cartoon of mine since 2005, so I decided he needed to 'get in on the action' again. Rich actually spotted his cameo of his own accord, but later admitted that while watching Ahmed 3 his exact thought-process was 'why is someone wearing my t-shirt? Oh wait, that's me!'.
By far the most obvious cameo is everyone's favourite hero from The Everyday Adventures of Steve. Steve is even wearing the same tie he wears in Steve 3, so I guess you just have to assume that at some point during that episode he takes a break to look at a house in Southampton. Why would he do this? I have no idea.
If you had no idea what I was talking about when I mentioned the DVS Public Service Announcement then it's highly unlikely you'll know who this guy is. Basically, we had an exceptionally strange guy in our hall during the first year at uni, and I ended up making a short cartoon series depicting what I reckon Daniel gets up to in his spare time. For those of you who love random bits of trivia, Jimmy's voice in the Steve series is actually me doing an exaggerated impression of Daniel's voice. Speaking of Jimmy...
Well, I couldn't really have Steve in Ahmed 3 without including his pretty useless sidekick Jimmy. I haven't really got much else to say here, except that Jimmy probably went to look at the house just because Steve had done so earlier. Does Jimmy idolise Steve because he's in love with him? Yes. No. I'm not sure.
Ok, I'll be honest here - the majority of the other cameos are at least vaguely recognisable, but this one is just ridiculous. Dr Russel was actually my chemisty teacher when I was at Watford Boys' Grammar School, and there were several lectures where I'd stop paying attention and draw the good doctor in a number of hilarious situations/adventures. In case you're wondering, the image on the right is one I drew Andy (who was also in Dr Russel's class) while on MSN - the reason I can't show you the rest of the image is because it's ridiculously obscene.
Yeah, I know this isn't a real cameo, but it's a reference so that counts! For those who don't know, the writing on this (clearly awesome) guy's jumper is Tokyo Sunrise, the name of a currently unfinished comic/cartoon I started two years ago and never got round to finishing. Tokyo Sunrise is actually a project I really want continue at some point, but the serious storyline and high-quality artwork is something that would currently take too long to get done. If you haven't seen them before, you can check out the first page of the comic here, and the teaser trailer for the cartoon here. There are actually two more 'cameos', but I thought they were so obvious they didn't really need explaining. Might as well include them anyway...
If you watched the out-takes in Ahmed 3, you probably noticed a bit where Ollie and myself start going crazy and pretend we're doing a series of TV adverts, one of which was me spoofing the current Cadbury's advert. I'm not sure if this ad is being played outside of Britain, but it basically starts with a close-up of a gorilla and slowly pans back, and after what seems like half an hour the gorilla starts going ape (har har) and smacks the drums in time to some music. After another thirty minutes the screen fades to the Cadbury's logo and, well, that's it. Some people who I can only assume have serious mental problems have decided to call this the best advert ever made, for reasons I'm not entirely sure of. Seriously, what's good about this advert? It has nothing to do with chocolate and it hasn't made me want to go and buy a Cadbury's bar! Thinking about it, I actually remember hearing someone say it's a good advert because it 'makes you talk about it'. Now hang on a minute, I could make a Cadbury's advert where I slowly zoom-in on a giant turd for ten minutes and you can be damn sure people would talk about it, but this wouldn't make it a good advert. In short - this adverts sucks hard and I felt like spoofing it.
Ok so this last one really isn't a cameo, but I thought I'd chuck it in here anyway. The guy I'm speaking to at the end of Ahmed 3 is Tom Fielden, who's one of my uni housemates. He last appeared in the infamous cooking scene in the DVS Public Service Announcement back in 2005, so I decided (seeing as he also had to suffer the incompetence of Mr Ahmed last year) it was time to put him in a new cartoon. I think he actually he did a great job on his lines, even if it did take him a while to get them right - check out the out-takes and you'll see what I mean! So yeah, there you go - who knew I'd end up putting so many familiar faces in a cartoon series that only has two main characters! |
